The Weller family has a prominent place in Kentucky Bourbon history. Daniel Weller traveled by flatboat with his family and settled in Kentucky in 1794. He started distilling whiskey like his father and the tradition would continue with his son Samuel and his grandson, William Larue Weller, founder of W.L. Weller and Sons. W.L. Weller was noted for replacing rye with wheat as the secondary grain for his bourbon. Wheat mash bill fans love the results to this day, a softer, sweeter, smoother profile than typical of rye bourbons.
Buffalo Trace’s wheat mash bill begins aging at 114 proof, lower than their rye bourbons, which go in at a legal barrel entry of 125 proof. Weller Full Proof (blue label) is bottled at 114 proof, increasing the warmth amidst its generally gentler Weller cousins. Some lucky winner will have the pleasure of discovering that this non-chill filtered bourbon really increases the spectrum of this multi-color bottle flight while maintaining the sweetness Weller fans love.
